- Creative Writing: Create story concepts or characters.
- Business Branding: Generate product names or branding ideas.
- Pretty much any Creative Activity: lyric writing, visual concepts, and etc.
How to Get Started:
- Three Step Process: 1. Pick Random Words, 2. Make Connections, and 3. Refine Ideas
- Detailed Steps: Start Brainstorming: The Basic Steps.
This method is works for most any area that requires creative input. In the short video below, James Taylor gives a overview of how to use random words for brainstorming - primarily in the marketing arena.
Brainstorming Technique: Random Words
Start Brainstorming: The Basic Steps
Let's break this all this brainstorming talk down into some actionable steps.
Step 1: Choosing Random Words
Here are three ways to pick random words for brainstorming:
Method | Description |
---|---|
Online Generators | Use the free RandomWordGen.com tool for quick results. |
Paperback Dictionary | Flip through a dictionary for random words. |
Book Sampling | Pick random words from books or articles. |
I, of course, would recommend you use our Random Word Generator. This tool is great for creative brainstorming.
Step 2: Making Connections
Once you have a list of random words, the next step is to link them to together to produce new trains of thought. Try these techniques:
- Free association: Quickly write down any thoughts that come to mind from these unexpected associations.
- Force connections: No matter how unlikely or seemingly ridiculous, push yourself to find specific connections between the random words and your creative goal.
- Visual mapping: Sketch out ideas and connections to see how they can possibly relate to each other.
Here's a simple way to visually structure your connection process:
- Write the random word of interest in the center of a page.
- Quickly jot down 10 to 15 related thoughts or ideas.
- Identify the most relevant connections that support your creative aims.
Step 3: Developing Ideas
The SCAMPER method is a great to way to generate or refine ideas. SCAMPER is a brainstorming methodology that uses these seven tactics:
The Tactic | How To Use It |
---|---|
Substitute | Replace one element with another. |
Combine | Blend features from different ideas. |
Adapt | Adjust the idea to fit a new situation. |
Modify | Creatively modify the idea or make it bigger or smaller |
Put | Place the idea in scenarios or contexts where they can be used. |
Eliminate | Remove some ideas or aspects that are not helpful or valuable. |
Reverse | Look at the concept from the opposite angle. |
Have short, ten to fifteen minute, sessions for each of these idea generation tactics. Quickly alternating between these SCAMPER tactics will help keep the process focused and fresh. Take breaks whenever necessary to avoid burnout.
Five Practical Brainstorming Tips
If you're not getting the results you're looking for, here are some practical brainstorming tips that might help you.
Tip 1: It Takes Time
It's rare that one brainstorming session will get you the exact results that you want.
Don't rush things and accept the first adequate solution. The most creative ideas tend to surface only after multiple sessions.
It often takes many attempts to strike gold so have patience with the process. Great ideas follow their own time schedule.
Tip 2: Take Regular Breaks
Brainstorming is not like regular work where you can muscle through a long shift productively. You need to keep sessions very short otherwise you will find yourself quickly spinning your wheels. And be sure to take mini-breaks within each session to stay refreshed.
If you find that a session is particularly ineffective then take a few days off from the process - especially if you're starting to feel frustrated. Sometimes you just need to take some time away to recharge your creative battery.
Tip 3: Look For Multiple Meanings
When we see a random word like "cloud", for example, we tend to think literally of a cloud in the sky but this word, like most words, can have multiple meanings and associations that might help you.
If we think about it, "cloud" can refer to online storage. It can signify a state of mind or fluid as in "cloudy". A "cloud" can metaphorically represent heaven. It can also represent something ominous as in a "dark cloud" over your head.
Taken into the account the multiple associations and meanings of words can help to widen the creative possibilities available to you.
Tip 4: Create First. Edit Last.
It's important to focus on generating ideas freely without judgment. Things can be refined later on in another session if necessary.
The way I like to think of it, is that a bad idea always precedes a good idea. "Bad ideas" are a necessary part of the process. They must not be impeded.
If you prevent them from coming out then, most likely, the great idea will never arrive. And sometimes what is seemingly a bad idea can, with a slight twist, become a great idea.
Reserve judgement for the end of a session. Creating and editing are different tasks and doing them at the same time will lead to poor results.
Doing both at the same time will transform you into a disgruntled perfectionist perpetually waiting on a miracle.
Tip 5: Set Session Specific Goals
To stay productive and focused, organize your sessions with a clear goal in mind.
Imagine you want to come up with a name for a musical band. Your goal for the first session would be to create and then rank three good names. At the end of the session, figure out which one of the three is best.
Now you have established a clear benchmark. In your second session, when you produce another three names, they will have to compete against the previous day's winner.
Having an existing creative idea to compete against can be very motivating and make the goal line much clearer to everyone involved.
Practical Uses and Brainstorming Examples
Random word brainstorming can spark intriguing ideas and solutions for creative projects. Here's how you might apply it in a couple of different areas.
Creative Writing with Random Words
At the basic concept or character level of creative writing, random words can be tremendously helpful in getting your creative engine revving.
I'll try to demonstrate, in real time, how this might be done.
I'm going to, right now as I write this, use the random word generator and force myself to come up with a story or character concept. Let's see how this goes.
BLOOD + RADIO
I generated 6 random words. The word "blood" struck me as the most evocative. I thought it was best paired with "radio". I then thought of some associated concepts for both these two words.
This combination suggested a character to me: a late night radio DJ who's a vampire.
For me, this type of character would work better in an earlier time period so maybe I'll set the story in the late 80s or early 90s.
Something endangers his job - a large corporation - that would be the antagonistic force. They want to replace him with some automated software. He decides to stop them.
The story, in essence, would be about an anti-hero vampire going against a heartless corporation. I see it as a somewhat gory anti-capitalist fable.
An alternative character idea might be a make something more modern, like an electronic music DJ who plays night-time gigs at small clubs. It would take more development but it's also a good idea to start playing with.
As you can see, it's not that hard to grow the basic concept of a story from some random words. The real trick is creating one for the type of story that resonates with you.
After that, it's easy. It's now just a matter of endless months of frustratingly hard work to get it all written.☺

Business and Product Names
Random word brainstorming can also be great for naming businesses or products.
Many of these types of business names involve word hacking - a method of modifying an existing word in some manner to create a unique brand. This strategy that has become tremendously popular in recent decades.
I've written a rather comprehensive article on How to Create a Catchy Business Name. Go check it out - if that's the kind of thing that you're into.
Random Words vs Standard Brainstorming
The main difference between random word and standard brainstorming lies in how they approach problem-solving. Here's a quick breakdown:
Aspect | Standard Brainstorming | Random Word Brainstorming |
---|---|---|
Starting Point | Focuses directly on the problem | Begins with an unrelated word |
Thinking Process | Follows logical connections | Encourages unexpected connections |
Idea Generation | Relies on direct relationships | Sparks surprising associations |
Mental Approach | Relies on existing knowledge | Challenges standard thought patterns |
In my opinion, teams using random word techniques tend to come up with more original ideas and concepts when compared to traditional brainstorming methods.
Key Benefits
Random word brainstorming brings several advantages to creative problem-solving:
Boosts Creativity: By engaging different cognitive processes like lateral thinking and associative reasoning, this method helps unlock fresh ideas.
Encourages Collaboration: In group settings, this technique fosters inclusivity. Studies suggest that most participants prefer this approach for future brainstorming sessions, thanks to its ability to:
- Create a level playing field for all contributors
- Reduce fear of failure by embracing ambiguity
Overcomes Mental Blocks: This method is especially useful for breaking through creative obstacles because it:
- Disrupts repetitive thought patterns
- Forces new perspectives on familiar problems
- Lowers self-censorship
Versatile Use: This method can be effective for a wide range of endeavors such as creative writing, visual art, and business marketing.
Conclusion
Random word brainstorming is a powerful way to spark creativity by encouraging unexpected connections. This approach can quickly help you to shift your perspective and break out of routine thinking patterns.
By adding random word brainstorming to your creative toolbox, you’ll be able to quickly access lateral thinking patterns and discover new ideas in unexpected ways.
